About Liberia |
History: The country of Liberia was established by freed slaves from America announcing independence on July 26, 1847. However, even after returning to Africa Liberians often referred to themselves as “Americans”. Liberia’s government is closely modeled after that of the United States, with three branches of government. Except for two years 1997 & 1998, Liberia was at civil war from 1989 till 2003. Over a quarter million people lost there lives and a million fled the country during the long drawn out civil war. On January 16, 2006 Ellen Sirleaf became the first female president of an African country. While president Sirleaf is working hard to rebuild a war torn country, capital is still lacking. Liberia has yet to reestablish running water, electrical lines and major road ways.
